International competition for the new name runs until November 26
General Motors has developed two electric bikes, which will go on sale in 2019, and is launching a public competition to come up with a brand to market the two-wheelers.
The company is calling on the public to come up with a new brand to encompass both its two new bikes: one a compact model, and the other foldable.
GM describes the bikes as “innovative, integrated and connected”, but hasn’t provided any details about their price, range, weight, recharge time or features.
Entrants will need to come up with a name that’s “simple, smart, and bold”, easily understood across the world, and most importantly, able to be trademarked.
Submissions will also need to include around 150 words detailing their inspiration. For those thinking of submitting Bikey McBikeface, the rules state names must not “be jokey, punny, or offensive (but can be fun)”.
“We want to expand our thinking beyond the company walls and hear from people who like to move and have rad ideas,” Hannah Parish, director of General Motors Urban Mobility Solutions, said about the competition.
The winning entry will take home US$10,000 ($14,100), while the other nine finalists walk away with US$1000 ($1410).
Australians wishing to enter the competition are out of luck, unless they are legal residents of the USA, Canada (but not Quebec), Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, or the United Kingdom.

The competition is already under way, and closes on November 26, US time. The winner will be announced on January 31, 2019.
