2020 Mercedes-Maybach GLS Spy Shots

This is a prototype of the new-gen Mercedes GLS, but not the usual one. No, this is something essentially better and more upscale, so to say. The camouflaged testing prototype is actually the all-new 2020 Mercedes-Maybach GLS – an ultra-luxurious SUV that’s going to have a very few decent rivals when it arrives sometime in 2020. The biggest competitors are going to be the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan, while some reports suggest that the segment could get one great rival from Aston Martin’s Lagonda brand.

Even though it uses the name as Mercedes’ popular SUV, the 2020 Maybach GLS will not share all the details with it. Just look the camouflaged vehicle and you will notice a totally different grille treatment that doesn’t have anything in common with the regular GLS. Instead, the Maybach high-riding machine will receive a unique grille with vertical slats, which has been taken from the Ultimate Luxury concept. Headlights, on the other hand, appear to be borrowed from the regular model. When the model losses the camouflage, it will most probably reveal plenty of shiny parts. Yes, the automaker will use plenty of chrome in order to make it more interesting, while the rear end should feature a unique bumper treatment along with a totally different exhaust pipe layout. Of course, the side pillars in the back are going to accommodate Maybach badge.

We haven’t seen the cabin of the luxurious SUV so far, yet we are sure that the automaker prepares a special treatment. Moreover, we would not be surprised if they decide to offer a four-seat arrangement, which will offer plenty of space, especially in the rear.

Just like the regular GLS, the 2020 Mercedes-Maybach GLS will ride on a stretched version of MHA platform. The architecture has been familiar already as it’s underpinning every single SUV from the GLC up (the list excludes the iconic G-Class of course).

The gorgeous SUV will use a mighty engine without any doubt, yet don’t expect to see any kind of V12 anywhere near the hood. Instead, the new Mercedes- Maybach GLS will use an AMG’s 4.0-liter biturbo. Maybe, but just maybe the automaker decides to offer a plug-in hybrid as well.

Stay tuned for updates.
