New crossover ‘coupe’ here in Q3 2018 priced from $76,900
Australian pricing and specifications for the all-new 2019 BMW X4 range have been announced this week, ahead of an on-sale date during the third quarter of 2018.
Four variants of the new crossover coupe will be available from launch: the xDrive20i, xDrive20d, xDrive30i and M40i.
Pricing for the entry-level xDrive20i M Sport starts at $76,900 before on-road costs, over $10,000 more than the X3 range-opener. It’s worth noting, however, the entry-level X3 is rear-wheel drive only, and the X4’s price increase is partially offset by enhanced specification.
Standard equipment from base includes 19-inch M light alloy wheels, a head-up display, LED headlights and fog-lights, adaptive suspension, automatic headlights and wipers, tri-zone climate control, automatic tailgate, Navigation Professional incorporating a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and ConnectedDrive Services, and DAB+ digital radio.
There’s also the Driving Assistant pack with lane-departure warning, lane-change warning and speed sign recognition, Parking Assistant Plus pack with an automated park function and 360-degree camera system, leather/cloth ‘Vernasca’ upholstery, sports front seats with electric adjustment, memory function for the driver’s seat, an M leather steering wheel, along with the high-gloss ‘Shadow Line’ exterior package.
Power in the xDrive20i comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine making 135kW of power and 290Nm of torque, sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic as standard. BMW claims a 0-100 time of 8.3 seconds, though fuel consumption is still ‘TBC’.
Next is the xDrive20d, which is priced at $79,900 plus ORCs. Equipment levels mirror those of the xDrive20i, with the only difference being the powertrain.
Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, with outputs rated at 140kW and 400Nm respectively. The 0-100 sprint takes a claimed 8.0 seconds, and fuel consumption is again ‘TBC’.
Third rung on the ladder is the xDrive30i, wearing a ticket of $83,900 before ORCs. Extra kit includes full ‘Vernasca’ leather upholstery, keyless access, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, M Sport brakes, Driving Assistant Plus (incl. adaptive cruise control with stop&go, front cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, side collision warning, and lane control assist), adaptive LED headlights with automatic high-beam, along with 20-inch M light alloy wheels.
Powering the xDrive30i is an uprated 2.0-litre turbo petrol making 185kW and 350Nm, sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed ‘sports’ automatic transmission. BMW claims a 0-100 time of 6.3 seconds for this variant, which would make most hot hatches sweat – not bad for an SUV.
Finally, the flagship of the line-up – at least for the time being – is the M40i M Performance, priced at $109,900 plus on-roads.
The first M Performance variant of the X4 to be offered in Australia picks up 21-inch M light alloys, adaptive M suspension with model-specific tuning, an M Sport differential, panoramic sunroof, a 16-speaker harman/kardon sound system, ambient interior lighting (six colour schemes), a ‘Sensatec’ leather-look dashboard trim, heated front seats, ‘Poplar Grain’ wood trim inserts, and the ConnectedDrive Freedom Package with Concierge Services.
In addition to the extra kit, the top-spec X4 is headlined by what’s under the bonnet – a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six petrol engine putting out a healthy 265kW of power and 500Nm of torque, good for a claimed 0-100 time of just 4.8 seconds.
Several option packages are also available depending on variant, and the company says a range of single-item cost options will also be available to customers.
The Innovations Package ($2200) is available for the xDrive20i and xDrive20d models, adding keyless access, high-beam assist, adaptive LED headlights, wireless smartphone charging, and the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Meanwhile, the Comfort Package ($2800) is offered on all versions bar the M40i, and includes a “choice of woodgrain interior trims”, ambient interior lighting, lumbar support for the driver and front passenger, heated front seats, along with a 12-speaker HiFi system (not for xDrive30i).
Finally, there’s the Enhance Package ($8700) available again on the xDrive20i and xDrive20d, bringing 20-inch M light alloy wheels, full-leather upholstery, M Sport brakes, keyless access, ‘Galvanic control embellishers’, Driving Assistant Plus, adaptive LED headlights with high-beam assist, along with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
The new X4 is also the second BMW model to be offered with the M Sport X package (after the X2), available as a no-cost options on all variants except the M40i.
Pitched as a more rugged alternative to the ‘standard’ M Sport line, the M Sport X gets Frozen Grey design elements for the front grille and side cladding strips, M sport adaptive suspension with M Sport brakes, and model-specific 19-inch ‘alloy road wheels’ on the xDrive20i and xDrive20d, or 20-inchers on the xDrive30i.
Other facts and figures include a 525L boot, which expands to 1430L with the rear seat backs folded. The new X4 range will go on sale during the third quarter of 2018.
